So... You Want to Become a Creator? Here's What to Do After You Hit "Post"

If you've spent any time on TikTok or Instagram recently, you've probably had the same thought.

"Maybe I should just start posting."

Honestly?

You should.

One of the biggest mistakes aspiring creators make is waiting until they have the perfect camera, perfect niche or perfect content plan before they upload anything.

The reality is that almost every successful creator started by posting anyway.

But here's the bit people don't talk about enough.

Starting is easy. Knowing what to post after that is the hard part.

After working with brands on influencer campaigns every day at Pepper, we've seen exactly what businesses are looking for when they search for creators. And it isn't always what people expect.

Forget follower count for a minute

One of the biggest misconceptions about creator marketing is that brands only want creators with huge audiences.

Sometimes they do. Most of the time, they don't.

We've worked on campaigns where creators with a few thousand followers were chosen over creators with hundreds of thousands.

Why? Because they were a better fit.

A creator with 4,000 highly engaged runners is often far more valuable to a sports brand than someone with 100,000 followers who posts about everything.

Brands are buying relevance, not just reach.

Ask yourself one simple question

What could I realistically become known for?

Not what would get views. Not what everyone else is posting.

What could you genuinely keep talking about six months from now?

The best creator niches usually sit at the intersection of three things:

  • Something you genuinely enjoy
  • Something you know more about than the average person
  • Something people are interested in watching

That doesn't have to be groundbreaking.

Maybe you're obsessed with trying new restaurants.

Maybe you're renovating your first home.

Maybe you're training for your first marathon.

Maybe you're a teacher sharing classroom ideas.

Maybe you're documenting life as a new parent.

Maybe you're simply brilliant at finding affordable fashion.

You don't need to be the world's leading expert.

You just need to have something authentic to contribute.

You don't need a niche overnight

Another misconception is that you have to decide your niche before you post your first video.

You don't. Most creators discover their niche by creating.

Post different types of content.

Notice what people respond to.

Pay attention to what you actually enjoy making.

Over time, patterns start to appear.

That's usually your niche finding you, not the other way around.

Think less about going viral

Going viral is exciting. It's also unpredictable.

Brands are usually looking for something much more valuable.

Consistency.

Can you create regularly?

Can you tell a story?

Can you appear confidently on camera?

Can you build trust with your audience?

Can people understand who you are after watching a few videos?

Those qualities are often more attractive than one video with a million views.

Show your personality

Creators often think every post needs to be perfectly edited.

It doesn't. People follow people.

Talk to the camera. Share your opinions. Show the behind-the-scenes moments.

Document the process, not just the finished result.

Some of the strongest creator content feels like you're catching up with a friend.

That's exactly why it works.

If brands were looking at your profile today...

Imagine you're a brand manager.

You land on your Instagram or TikTok profile.

Within thirty seconds, could you answer:

  • What does this person create?
  • Who are they?
  • Who is their audience?
  • Could they talk naturally about our product?
  • Would our customers trust them?

If the answer is unclear, that's your biggest opportunity.

Your profile should tell that story without needing a bio full of buzzwords.

Do you need a management agency?

It's a question we're asked all the time.

The honest answer is... Not necessarily.

Management can be brilliant when you're handling multiple campaigns, negotiating fees, juggling contracts or trying to grow your career full-time.

A good manager becomes your commercial partner. But if you're just starting out, you probably don't need one yet.

In fact, signing with management too early can sometimes limit your opportunities if you're not yet receiving regular brand enquiries.

Focus first on building your content, understanding your audience and developing your own voice.

The opportunities will follow.

So how do brands actually find creators?

There are lots of different ways.

Some discover creators organically.

Some work through agencies.

Some use influencer platforms.

At Pepper, we've taken a slightly different approach.

We've built a free creator database where creators can join without signing contracts, paying membership fees or committing to management.

If a campaign comes up that matches your content, audience or niche, you'll hear about it.

That's it. No management fees, exclusivity, or catch.

Just another way for brands to discover creators who are genuinely the right fit.

The best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is today.

If you're waiting until you feel ready, you'll probably be waiting a long time.

Every creator you admire once uploaded their first slightly awkward video.

Every creator started with zero followers.

Every creator wondered whether anyone would watch.

The difference is they kept posting.

Your first fifty videos probably won't be your best.

They don't need to be, because every post teaches you something the last one couldn't.

And that's how creators are really built.
